Ang Thong from Koh Samui: Big Boat or Speedboat?

Updated October 24, 2026 · 5 min read

Green limestone islands rising from blue water in Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park

Choose the big boat if comfort and price matter most; choose the speedboat if you want less time in transit and do not mind a firmer ride. The Mu Ko Ang Thong cruise with a kayaking option lasts 9 hours and starts at €34.36. The speedboat day trip lasts 8 hours and starts at €60.80. Both are full-day outings rather than simple transfers.

What changes with the boat

The larger cruise boat takes longer between Koh Samui and the archipelago, but it gives you more room to move and a less abrupt ride. Its itinerary names kayaking, snorkelling and a hike to the inland lagoon. It is the sensible default for first-time visitors, mixed-age groups and anyone who values the journey as much as the stops.

The speedboat covers distance faster and its itinerary includes Koh Wao or Koh Tay Plow, Emerald Lake, kayaking or a hike on Mae Koh. The trade-off is physical: repeated impacts over waves can be tiring. If you have back problems, are pregnant or are worried about seasickness, ask the operator about conditions and suitability before booking. No boat type removes the effect of rough water.

The comparison that matters

The one-hour difference between the first two trips does not mean an extra hour at every stop. Routes change with weather, sea conditions and park instructions. Read the current meeting point, pickup area and park-fee wording on the booking page; do not assume that every item is included because two tours visit the same islands.

When not to book

The park is usually closed from 1 November to 15 December, depending on monsoon weather. Dates vary, so check them before booking. Even an open park is not a promise of calm water. Operators can change or cancel a departure when conditions demand it.

If a long day, a climb in heat and several wet transfers sound unappealing, choose a shorter island trip instead. Ang Thong earns its place for the limestone scenery and lagoon viewpoints, but it is not a relaxed beach day.

Our recommendation

For most visitors, the 9-hour Ang Thong cruise offers the better balance: it costs substantially less and the larger boat is the more forgiving platform. Pay for the speedboat when reducing crossing time is worth more to you than ride comfort.
